Maternal perception of infant weight significantly impacts child nutrition. Inaccurate perceptions and poor feeding practices are common among Mexican mothers, affecting infant weight status.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Nutrition
- Maternal Health
- Public Health in Middle-Income Countries
Background:
- Early childhood malnutrition has lasting health effects, including obesity.
- Maternal factors influence infant nutrition, but evidence from middle-income countries is scarce.
- This study focuses on Mexico, a middle-income country, to address this knowledge gap.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between maternal perceptions, feeding practices, and infant nutritional status.
- To identify specific maternal factors associated with infant malnutrition in Mexico.
- To inform interventions aimed at improving infant nutrition in similar settings.
Main Methods:
- 192 mother-infant dyads in northeastern Mexico were studied.
- Data collected via questionnaires on maternal perceptions and feeding practices, and anthropometric measurements for infants.
- Statistical analysis, including multiple logistic regression, was used to determine associations.
Main Results:
- 38% of infants were overweight/obese, 7% underweight.
- Maternal factors like low self-efficacy, poor perception of infant hunger/satiety cues, and inaccurate infant weight perception were prevalent.
- Inaccurate maternal weight perception was linked to both underweight (overestimation) and overweight/obese (underestimation) infants.
Conclusions:
- Inaccurate maternal perception of infant weight is a key factor influencing infant nutritional status.
- Mexican mothers exhibited limited nutritional knowledge and suboptimal feeding practices.
- Maternal sleep duration exceeding 8 hours was associated with underweight infants.
