    Background:

    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with diverse clinical manifestations.
    • Optic neuropathy is a potential neurological complication of SLE.

    • Seven cases of optic neuropathy in patients with SLE were analyzed.
    • Clinical presentations included acute retrobulbar optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy, and progressive visual loss.
    • Visual evoked response testing showed abnormalities in latency and amplitude.

    Findings:

    • Visual outcomes in SLE-associated optic neuropathy were variable.
    • Corticosteroid therapy resulted in occasional visual improvement.
    • The likely cause is vaso-occlusive disease affecting small optic nerve vessels.

    Implications:

    • Early recognition and treatment of optic neuropathy in SLE patients may be crucial.
    • Understanding the pathogenesis aids in managing visual complications.
    • Further research into optimal treatment strategies for SLE-related optic neuropathy is warranted.
