  • To assess the perceived value and impact of PC input on candidate ranking.

  • Surveys were distributed to Dermatology Program Directors (PDs) and PCs in 2023.
  • Data collection utilized email distribution via the Association of Professors of Dermatology (APD) listserv and publicly available PC contact information.
  • Responses from 62 PCs and 35 PDs were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • 40.3% of surveyed PCs participated in applicant ranking, with most providing informal commentary or serving on committees.
  • 64% of PCs involved in ranking reported their input changed candidate rankings.
  • A majority of PCs (84%) and all participating PDs (100%) found PC input helpful and valued.
  • 79.1% of PCs felt they gained unique perspectives on candidates compared to faculty.

Conclusions:

  • Dermatology residency PCs contribute significantly to the resident selection process.
  • PC input is perceived as valuable, helpful, and impactful by both PCs and PDs.
  • The unique perspectives of PCs offer a valuable dimension to evaluating residency applicants.
