    Summary

    This study found no link between diet and bladder cancer risk. However, lower serum levels of retinol, carotenoids, and retinol-binding protein (RBP) were observed in patients with invasive or poorly differentiated bladder tumors.

    Background:

    • Bladder cancer is a significant health concern.
    • Nutritional factors, including vitamins and antioxidants, are being investigated for their role in cancer prevention and progression.
    • Serum levels of certain micronutrients may serve as biomarkers for cancer status.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between serum concentrations of retinol, retinol-binding protein (RBP), carotenoids, pre-albumin, zinc, and copper, and bladder cancer.
    • To explore potential correlations between these serum markers and the invasiveness or differentiation grade of bladder tumors.
    • To assess whether dietary intake of retinol and carotenoids influences bladder cancer risk.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum levels of retinol, RBP, carotenoids, pre-albumin, zinc, and copper were measured in 111 patients.

    • Low serum levels of retinol and associated components were not detected in patients with early-stage transitional cell carcinoma.
    • The observed low serum levels of retinol, RBP, and carotenoids in a small group of patients with poorly differentiated invasive bladder tumors warrant further investigation.
