Hepatitis B infection in prostitutes.

C L Goh, V S Rajan, S H Chan

    International Journal of Epidemiology
    |March 1, 1986
    PubMed
    Summary

Prostitutes have a higher prevalence of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) antibodies, increasing with duration of work. Early HBV immunization is recommended for this high-risk group due to seroconversion rates.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Public Health
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Previous studies indicate higher Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) marker prevalence in sex workers compared to the general population.
    • The risk factors and serological profiles of HBV infection in this demographic require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the correlation between the duration of prostitution and HBV antibody prevalence.
    • To assess the seroconversion rates and HBsAg clearance in a cohort of prostitutes over a two-year period.

    Main Methods:

    • Cross-sectional and longitudinal study design.
    • Prevalence assessment of HBV markers (antibodies, HBsAg).
    • Two-year follow-up of HBsAg positive and negative individuals.

    Main Results:

    • A significant correlation was observed between the duration of prostitution and HBV antibody prevalence.
    • HBV antibody prevalence doubled after the first year of prostitution.
    • 37% of HBsAg positive prostitutes cleared the antigen within two years, while 10% of HBsAg negative prostitutes seroconverted.

    Conclusions:

    • The duration of prostitution is a significant risk factor for HBV infection.
    • Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection dynamics, including clearance and seroconversion, are notable in this population.
    • Early immunization against HBV is crucial for this high-risk group.
