Summary

Dexmedetomidine is a feasible option for pre-procedure sedation during less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) in preterm infants. This study shows comparable safety and success rates, regardless of gestational age, informing future sedation strategies.

Background:

  • Less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) is a preferred method for surfactant delivery in neonates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of dexmedetomidine as a sedative agent prior to LISA in preterm and early-term infants.
  • To compare outcomes based on post-menstrual age (PMA) at birth.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 37 preterm and early-term infants receiving intravenous dexmedetomidine for LISA.
  • Assessment of primary outcomes including absence of bradycardia, hypotension, hypothermia, respiratory depression, and LISA success (no intubation within 72 hours).
  • Comparison of infants based on a 32-week PMA cutoff.
