Colloids

Children at play often make suspensions such as mixtures of mud and water, flour and water, or a suspension of solid pigments in water known as tempera paint. These suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures composed of relatively large particles that are visible to the naked eye or can be seen with a magnifying glass. They are cloudy, and the suspended particles settle out after mixing. On the other hand, a solution is a homogeneous mixture in which no settling occurs and in which the dissolved...

Detergent Purification of Membrane Proteins01:18

Detergent Purification of Membrane Proteins

5.1K
Detergents are used to purify the integral proteins of the membrane. The hydrophobic portion of the detergent can replace membrane phospholipids while solubilizing the membrane proteins. When detergent monomers reach a specific concentration in a solution called critical micelle concentration (CMC), they form micelles. Above CMC, the concentration of the detergent monomers remains in equilibrium with the micelle. The number of detergent monomers present in the CMC varies for each detergent, and...

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Environmental Science
  • Nanotechnology

Background:

  • Oily wastewater poses environmental challenges.
  • Effective separation of emulsified oil droplets is crucial for water purification.
  • Existing emulsifiers and separation methods have limitations in efficiency and recyclability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize novel amphiphilic magnetic-responsive mixed-shell nanoparticles (Mag-MSNPs).
  • To evaluate the interfacial activity and emulsifying capabilities of Mag-MSNPs.
  • To demonstrate the efficiency and recyclability of Mag-MSNPs for oily water purification.

Main Methods:

  • Electrostatic-mediated cross-linking of diblock copolymers to form nanoparticle cores.
  • In situ growth of magnetite within the cross-linked core.
  • Characterization of nanoparticle properties and interfacial activity.
  • Testing oil-water separation efficiency in an n-hexane/water system.
  • Assessing nanoparticle recyclability over multiple separation cycles.

Main Results:

  • Mag-MSNPs exhibit a magnetic-responsive core and mixed hydrophilic/lipophilic shells.
  • High interfacial activity (13.1 mN m⁻¹) achieved at low emulsifier concentration (1.2 mg mL⁻¹).
  • Achieved 99.5% oil-water separation efficiency, outperforming conventional methods.
  • Maintained high separation efficiency (98.8%) after five cycles, demonstrating recyclability.

Conclusions:

  • Mag-MSNPs are highly effective emulsifiers and demulsifiers for oily water.
  • Magnetic collection enables efficient and rapid separation of emulsified oil.
  • The developed Mag-MSNPs offer a promising, recyclable solution for oily water purification.
