Ischemic Stroke l: Introduction01:15

Ischemic Stroke l: Introduction

Ischemic stroke is an acute cerebrovascular condition in which blood flow to a brain region is suddenly interrupted, leading to tissue infarction. Neurons depend on continuous oxygen and glucose supply, so even brief reductions in perfusion cause energy failure, ionic imbalance, and irreversible injury. Ischemic strokes are classified into thrombotic and embolic types based on their underlying mechanisms.Thrombotic MechanismsThrombotic stroke develops when a clot forms within a cerebral artery.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Stroke is a leading global cause of disability and death.
  • Timely intervention is critical for effective stroke treatment and outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess stroke knowledge in Malta.
  • To identify knowledge gaps contributing to delayed stroke treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Mixed-methods approach: qualitative interviews followed by a quantitative online survey.
  • Survey included 1872 participants from the general Maltese population and healthcare workers.
  • Data analysis using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Main Results:

  • Significant gaps identified in knowledge of stroke symptoms, risk factors, and appropriate responses.
  • Higher stroke knowledge and better response observed in younger, male, non-Maltese, urban, highly educated, and higher-income individuals.
  • Healthcare workers demonstrated superior stroke knowledge compared to the general public; a positive correlation exists between knowledge and response.

Conclusions:

  • Targeted educational interventions are essential to improve stroke awareness and response.
  • Specific demographic groups (older adults, women, rural residents, lower-income individuals) require focused educational efforts.
  • Comprehensive campaigns, tailored materials, and professional development for healthcare workers can enhance stroke prevention and management.
