Abstract:
Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae(hvKp) has a unique ability to cause organ or life-threatening tissue invasive infection in multiple sites. This case highlights that classical hvKp resulted in multiple abscesses in every body site, especially in the necrotizing fasciitis and osteomyelitis. The combination of antibiotics, drainage and debridement is essential for cure.
Insights
Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae can cause severe, invasive infections across multiple body sites. Prompt treatment combining antibiotics, drainage, and debridement is crucial for recovery.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Microbiology
- Clinical Medicine
Background:
- Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) is recognized for causing severe, invasive infections.
- hvKp infections can manifest with high morbidity and mortality, often involving multiple organ systems.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present a case study of a classical hvKp infection.
- To highlight the unique presentation and management challenges of hvKp.
Main Methods:
- Case report detailing a patient with widespread hvKp infection.
- Clinical assessment, microbiological investigation, and treatment course documentation.
Main Results:
- The patient presented with multiple abscesses in various body sites.
- Necrotizing fasciitis and osteomyelitis were significant complications.
- Successful treatment involved a combination of antibiotics, surgical drainage, and debridement.
Conclusions:
- Classical hvKp can lead to extensive tissue invasion and abscess formation.
- Multimodal treatment including antibiotics, drainage, and debridement is essential for managing severe hvKp infections.
- This case underscores the importance of early recognition and aggressive management of hvKp.
