Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can reliably measure ellipsoid zone (EZ) reflectivity, a marker of mitochondrial function. This reflectivity is reduced in neuroinflammatory and mitochondrial optic neuropathies, suggesting its potential as a diagnostic biomarker.
