Competitive dancesport performance is significantly influenced by emotional states like anxiety and self-confidence. Understanding these factors, along with experience and preparedness, can help athletes achieve peak performance in dancesport (DS).
Area of Science:
- Sports Science
- Psychology
Background:
- Competitive dancesport (DS) performance is influenced by physical and mental factors.
- Emotions experienced by athletes are strongly linked to sports performance.
- Direct relationship between performance and emotional states in DS remains under-investigated.
Purpose of the Study:
- Investigate the influence of anxiety and self-confidence on DS performance.
- Examine the impact of experience, prior victories, and preparedness on performance outcomes.
- Identify optimal emotional states for peak performance and analyze differences across athlete levels and classes.
Main Methods:
- 71 Italian DS athletes (B, C, D classes) participated.
- Demographic data, experience, preparedness, and winnings were collected.
- Revised Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2R) and competition classification were used.
Main Results:
- CSAI-2R variables significantly predicted performance outcomes (p < 0.05), with somatic anxiety having a lesser effect.
- Significant differences found between classes in experience, preparedness, cognitive anxiety, and self-confidence (p = 0.000).
- Optimal levels for good performance: cognitive anxiety (11.61 ± 2.27), somatic anxiety (15.77 ± 1.72), self-confidence (15.12 ± 2.56).
Conclusions:
- Emotional states, particularly anxiety and self-confidence, play a significant role in competitive dancesport performance.
- Experience, preparedness, athlete class, and level also contribute to performance outcomes.
- Findings offer insights into the multifactorial nature of DS performance and optimal emotional states.
