Appendicitis-I: Introduction

89
The appendix, a small, narrow, blind tube extending from the inferior part of the cecum, is widely regarded as a vestigial organ, having lost much of its original function through evolution. Despite its diminished role, the appendix can become inflamed, a condition known as appendicitis.
Etiology: Appendicitis can arise from various causes, primarily rooted in the obstruction of the appendix lumen. Factors contributing to this obstruction include fecal accumulation, lymphoid hyperplasia and, in...

Summary

Simple epididymal cysts (EC) are rare in childhood. Most cases are managed conservatively, with surgery reserved for persistent pain or acute scrotum, indicating a benign nature for these common scrotal findings.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Urology
  • Andrology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Simple epididymal cysts (EC) are uncommon in children, typically presenting during puberty.
  • Current treatment guidelines lack consensus, with a conservative approach often favored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze patients diagnosed with epididymal cysts (EC) regarding symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment outcomes.
  • Evaluate the clinical presentation and management of pediatric epididymal cysts.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of patients treated for EC between March 2012 and March 2023.
  • Diagnosis confirmed by physical examination and scrotal ultrasonography (US).

Main Results:

  • Epididymal cysts (EC) detected in 10.7% (72/1829) of scrotal Doppler US studies.
  • Mean age at presentation was 14.8 years; 41 patients reported scrotal pain.
  • Only 3 (4.1%) patients required surgical excision for persistent pain.

Conclusions:

  • Epididymal cysts (EC) are benign lesions managed conservatively.
  • Surgical intervention is indicated for persistent scrotal pain or acute scrotum presentations.
