Two basic types of preparation are used to visualize specimens with a light microscope: wet mounts and fixed specimens.

  • Evaluating the long-term color stability of these materials is crucial for clinical success.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the surface roughness and color stability of three CAP RCs (Omnichroma, Neo Spectra ST, Charisma Diamond One) against a conventional RC (Filtek Z350XT).
  • To assess the effect of common staining solutions (cola, coffee, black tea) on these properties over 21 days.

Main Methods:

  • Forty specimens of each RC material were prepared and divided into subgroups based on immersion solutions (cola, coffee, black tea, distilled water).
  • Surface roughness was measured using a non-contact optical profilometer at baseline and after 21 days.
  • Color change (ΔE00) was evaluated using a spectrophotometer at multiple time points (baseline, 1, 7, 21 days).

Main Results:

  • Filtek Z350XT exhibited significantly lower surface roughness compared to CAP RCs; no significant differences in roughness were found among CAP RCs.

  • Neo Spectra ST demonstrated the least color change, followed by Filtek Z350XT, while Omnichroma and Charisma Diamond One showed the most significant color alteration.

Conclusions:

  • While CAP RCs offer potential shade matching benefits, their color stability varies significantly when exposed to common beverages.
  • Neo Spectra ST appears to be the most color-stable among the tested CAP RCs.
  • Clinicians should consider the potential for color change with specific CAP RCs, particularly Omnichroma and Charisma Diamond One, in esthetic restorations.
