Summary

Thyroid cancer incidence is higher in females, but this study found ultrasound-triggered fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was more common in males. Sex disparities in thyroid ultrasound rates may drive sex disparities in thyroid cancer incidence.

Conclusions:

  • Sex disparities in thyroid ultrasound utilization appear to be a significant driver of observed sex disparities in thyroid cancer incidence.
  • The finding that ultrasound-triggered FNAB is more common in males challenges traditional understanding of sex-based thyroid cancer disparities.
  • While population-level differences in FNAB and cancer exist, differences among individuals undergoing ultrasound were minimal.
