Public awareness of AI-driven mental health interventions is low, but AI shows promise for accessible, cost-effective mental health support. Integrating AI with human professionals offers a compelling future, addressing stigma while acknowledging the irreplaceable human touch.
Area of Science:
- Mental Health Technology
- Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
- Public Health
Background:
- Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly vital in healthcare, offering solutions to challenges like India's doctor-patient ratio.
- Public perception significantly influences the adoption of new technologies, including AI-driven mental health interventions.
- Understanding user experiences and opinions is crucial for the effective implementation of AI in mental health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the current use, perception, and acceptance of AI-driven mental health interventions.
- To compare AI-based interventions with traditional, human-based mental health services.
- To identify factors influencing the adoption and effectiveness of AI in mental healthcare.
Main Methods:
- A web-based survey was administered to 466 adult participants in India.
- Data was collected between November and December 2023.
- The survey included 30 items assessing the use and perception of AI-based mental health interventions.
Main Results:
- A majority (65.5%) reported very low knowledge of AI interventions, with only 5.2% expressing high trust in them.
- Trust in human-based interventions was higher (24.5% high trust), though associated with significant stigma (51.9%).
- AI was positively perceived for accessibility, cost-effectiveness, 24/7 availability, and reduced stigma, but concerns included privacy and lack of human touch.
Conclusions:
- There is a significant lack of awareness regarding AI-driven mental health interventions.
- AI demonstrates potential for mental health prevention, assessment, and maintenance, particularly due to accessibility and reduced stigma.
- While AI cannot replace the human touch, its integration with human professionals presents a promising model for future mental healthcare.
