Synthetic Biology

4.7K
Synthetic biology is an interdisciplinary science that involves using principles from disciplines such as engineering, molecular biology, cell biology, and systems biology. It involves remodeling existing organisms from nature or constructing completely new synthetic organisms for applications such as protein or enzyme production, bioremediation, value-added macromolecule production, and the addition of desirable traits to crops, to name a few.

Genomics

35.9K
Genomics is the science of genomes: it is the study of all the genetic material of an organism. In humans, the genome consists of information carried in 23 pairs of chromosomes in the nucleus, as well as mitochondrial DNA. In genomics, both coding and non-coding DNA is sequenced and analyzed. Genomics allows a better understanding of all living things, their evolution, and their diversity. It has a myriad of uses: for example, to build phylogenetic trees, to improve productivity and...

Genome Annotation and Assembly

18.8K
The genome refers to all of the genetic material in an organism. It can range from a few million base pairs in microbial cells to several billion base pairs in many eukaryotic organisms. Genome assembly refers to the process of taking the DNA sequencing data and putting it all back together in a correct order to create a close representation of the original genome. This is followed by the identification of functional elements on the newly assembled genome, a process called genome annotation.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Informatics
  • Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
  • Data Science

Background:

  • Generating high-quality synthetic patient data is crucial for research, especially with limited real-world datasets.
  • The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic highlighted the need for robust data generation techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the performance, representativeness, realism, novelty, and diversity of synthetic data generated from a small cohort of SARS-CoV-2 positive patients.
  • To assess the utility of a Conditional Tabular Generative Adversarial Network (CTGAN) for creating realistic synthetic medical data.

Main Methods:

  • A CTGAN model was employed to generate synthetic data from 238 SARS-CoV-2 positive patients.
  • A Multidisciplinary Approach (TIMA) involving medical experts scrutinized data quality.
  • Sensitivity analysis determined optimal model parameters, generating 10,000 synthetic data points.

Main Results:

  • Synthetic data achieved high similarity scores with real data (contingency score 0.94, correlation similarity 0.97).
  • Principal Component Analysis confirmed diversity in synthetic data.
  • Nearly 100% of synthetic data was deemed authentic by the TIMA committee.

Conclusions:

  • The CTGAN model effectively generated a synthetic dataset that is highly representative, realistic, novel, and diverse compared to the original patient data.
  • Synthetic data holds significant promise for augmenting small medical datasets in research settings.
