    Summary

Double-contrast barium enema is effective for diagnosing ischemic colitis. Key findings include thumb-printing and longitudinal ulcers, which are characteristic signs of this condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Radiology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Ischemic colitis is a common gastrointestinal condition.
    • Accurate diagnosis relies on characteristic imaging findings.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of serial double-contrast barium enema in ischemic colitis.
    • To identify and characterize key radiological findings associated with ischemic colitis.

    Main Methods:

    • Serial double-contrast barium enema examinations were conducted on 40 patients diagnosed with nongangrenous ischemic colitis.
    • Patients were categorized into stricturing (15) and transient (25) forms.
    • Radiological findings including thumb-printing, longitudinal ulcers, eccentric deformity, sacculation, and transverse ridging were documented.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Thumb-printing was observed in 75% of patients, appearing earlier in the transient form (6 days) than the stricturing form (9 days).
    • Longitudinal ulcers were present in 60% of cases, with delayed healing in the stricturing form.
    • Other findings included eccentric deformity (48%), sacculation (30%), and transverse ridging (13%).

    Conclusions:

    • Longitudinal ulcers and thumb-printing are characteristic findings in ischemic colitis.
    • Double-contrast barium enema is a valuable imaging modality for visualizing these ulcers and aiding diagnosis.
