Reporter Genes02:11

Reporter Genes

Reporter genes are a type of protein-coding gene that are often tagged to a gene of interest. Once inside a target cell, reporter genes usually produce visually identifiable characteristics like fluorescence and luminescence when expressed along with the gene of interest. Thus, reporter genes “report” the presence or absence of genes of interest in an organism, determine the gene expression pattern, or track the physical location of a DNA segment or protein in the cell.

Area of Science:

  • Biochemistry
  • Molecular Biology
  • Life Sciences

Background:

  • The Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) Young Scientists' Forum (YSF) is a key event for early-career researchers.
  • The 2024 YSF aimed to foster comprehensive understanding of biochemistry applications.
  • The event served as a prelude to the 48th FEBS Congress in Milan.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a platform for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to present and discuss their work.
  • To offer insights into academic career paths, fellowships, and women in science.
  • To promote scientific exchange and networking among early-career scientists in biochemistry.

Main Methods:

  • Four keynote lectures by renowned scientists.
  • Four career-focused talks.
  • Oral presentations by selected participants.
  • Flash talks and poster sessions for all attendees.
  • Networking and social events.

Main Results:

  • Over 100 participants from approximately 30 countries attended.
  • Extensive scientific exchange and networking opportunities were facilitated.
  • A comprehensive perspective on biochemistry applications was explored.

Conclusions:

  • The 23rd FEBS YSF successfully fostered scientific dialogue and career development.
  • The event highlighted the importance of biochemistry in bridging scientific gaps.
  • The series will continue with the 24th YSF in Türkiye in 2025.
