A rare case of duodenal duplication in an infant contained ectopic gastric mucosa and respiratory tract elements, a first below the diaphragm. This finding offers a novel explanation for ulceration within the duplication.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Surgery
    • Gastroenterology
    • Developmental Biology

    Background:

    • Duodenal duplications are rare congenital anomalies.
    • Ectopic tissues within gastrointestinal duplications can lead to complications.

    Observation:

    • A large duodenal duplication was identified along the stomach's greater curvature in a 6-month-old infant.
    • The duplication shared a wide communication and blood supply with the proximal duodenum.
    • Histological examination revealed gastric mucosa and, uniquely, respiratory tract elements within the duplication.

    Findings:

    • The duodenal duplication presented with ectopic gastric mucosa and respiratory elements, a finding previously unreported below the diaphragm.
    • A mucosal ulceration within the duplication was associated with the respiratory tract elements.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical resection of the duplication was successfully performed.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the potential for complex congenital anomalies involving multiple germ layers.
    • The presence of respiratory elements offers a new perspective on the etiology of ulcerations in intestinal duplications.
    • This unique finding contributes to the understanding of foregut development and associated malformations.
