    Summary

    This study followed 117 boys circumcised for phimosis, finding few early complications. Late issues included urethral strictures and cosmetic concerns, but no serious psychological disorders were noted.

    Background:

    • Phimosis is a common condition in young boys.
    • Surgical circumcision is a frequent treatment for phimosis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term outcomes of childhood circumcision for phimosis.
    • To assess complications and patient satisfaction following the procedure.

    Main Methods:

    • A follow-up study of 117 boys circumcised for phimosis in 1976.
    • Data collected on early complications, late complications, and psychological impact.

    Main Results:

    • Most circumcisions were performed on an outpatient basis with few early complications (bleeding, infection).
    • 13 cases (11%) developed postoperative urethral stricture requiring intervention.
    • 5 patients reported cosmetic concerns, and 8 experienced shyness related to undressing, with no serious psychological disorders observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Circumcision for phimosis is generally safe with manageable late complications.
    • Indications for circumcision include scarred prepuce, recurrent balanitis, or unretractable foreskin in school-aged boys.
    • Parents can be reassured about the safety and efficacy of circumcision for phimosis when indicated.
