Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify key risk factors for falls in hospitalized older adults in China.
  • To inform the development of targeted fall prevention interventions.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 112 hospitalized older adults was assessed using the Johns Hopkins Fall Risk Assessment (JHFRAT).
  • Patients were categorized into low, medium, and high fall risk groups.
  • Clinical characteristics, medical history, mobility, and cognitive function were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • The high-risk group exhibited older age, lower weight and BMI, and a higher prevalence of stroke history and sarcopenia.
  • Multivariate regression identified stroke history and reduced gait speed as significant predictors of fall risk.
  • Low gait speed was strongly associated with increased fall risk (p=0.020).

Conclusions:

  • Hospitalized older adults with a history of stroke and diminished gait speed are at elevated risk for falls.
  • These findings provide valuable insights for implementing fall prevention programs in geriatric wards.
  • Early identification of these risk factors can improve patient safety and outcomes.
