Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...
Group Design02:01

Group Design

The most basic experimental design involves two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The two groups are designed to be the same except for one difference— experimental manipulation. The experimental group gets the experimental manipulation—that is, the treatment or variable being tested—and the control group does not. Since experimental manipulation is the only difference between the experimental and control groups, we can be sure that any differences between the two are due to...
Blind Procedures02:07

Blind Procedures

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which child was...
Systematic Sampling Method01:17

Systematic Sampling Method

Sampling is a technique to select a portion (or subset) of the larger population and study that portion (the sample) to gain information about the population. Data are the result of sampling from a population. The sampling method ensures that samples are drawn without bias and accurately represent the population. Because measuring the entire population in a study is not practical, researchers use samples to represent the population of interest.
Systematic sampling is one of the simplest methods...
What is an Experiment?01:12

What is an Experiment?

An experiment is a planned activity carried out under controlled conditions. The purpose of an experiment is to investigate the relationship between two variables. When one variable causes change in another, we call the first variable the explanatory or independent variable. The affected variable is called the response or dependent variable. In a randomized experiment, the researcher manipulates values of the explanatory variable and measures the resulting changes in the response variable. The...
Randomized Experiments01:13

Randomized Experiments

The randomization process involves assigning study participants randomly to experimental or control groups based on their probability of being equally assigned. Randomization is meant to eliminate selection bias and balance known and unknown confounding factors so that the control group is similar to the treatment group as much as possible. A computer program and a random number generator can be used to assign participants to groups in a way that minimizes bias.

Summary

A phone-delivered parental support program improved dietary habits in children with severe early childhood caries. However, it did not reduce caries recurrence after dental treatment under general anesthesia.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Public Health
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Severe early childhood caries (ECC) poses a high risk for continued caries progression post-treatment.
  • Children undergoing dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia for ECC require ongoing preventive strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a phone-delivered, motivational interviewing-based parental support program.
  • To assess the program's impact on caries recurrence and oral health habits in preschool children treated for ECC under general anesthesia.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, 2-arm randomized clinical trial with 151 children (<6 years) with ECC.
  • Intervention group received bi-weekly phone counseling for 1 year; control group received standard advice.
  • Caries progression was assessed using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) at 1 and 2 years post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in caries recurrence rates between groups at 1 or 2 years post-surgery.
  • The intervention group showed significantly reduced adverse oral health behaviors (e.g., snacking on sweets, consuming sweet drinks) after 1 year.
  • No group differences were observed in daily fluoride toothpaste brushing frequency.

Conclusions:

  • The motivational interviewing-based parental support program effectively improved dietary habits in children with ECC.
  • The program did not demonstrate a significant effect on preventing caries recurrence in this high-risk population.
  • Findings suggest that while behavioral interventions can influence habits, further strategies are needed to impact caries recurrence in ECC patients treated under general anesthesia.
