Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between sleep disturbance levels and injury status in collegiate student-athletes.

  • Secondary analysis of longitudinal survey data from a national sample of U.S. student-athletes (NCAA Division I), collected in October 2020 and January 2021.
  • Matched pairs of injured and non-injured student-athletes were analyzed, controlling for demographics, sport in-season status, and prior injury history.
  • Sleep disturbance levels served as the primary independent variable, with injury status as the main outcome measure.

Conclusions:

  • The study findings support the importance of addressing sleep disturbances in student-athletes.
  • Screening for and targeting sleep problems may be a viable strategy to reduce sports-related injuries.
  • Optimizing sleep hygiene could be a key component of injury prevention programs for collegiate athletes.
