Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) combined with photobiostimulation therapy (PBST) significantly improved hair regrowth in patients with hair loss compared to PBST alone. This combined approach offers a more effective strategy for hair count enhancement.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology and Trichology
- Regenerative Medicine
Background:
- Hair loss (HL) treatments combining micro-needling, growth factors, and low-level light/laser therapy (photobiostimulation therapy - PBST) show promise but require standardization.
- Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) is explored as an adjunct to PBST for enhanced hair regrowth (HR-G).
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the efficacy of combined PEMF and PBST versus PBST alone in treating androgenic alopecia (AGA) and COVID-19-related HL.
- To evaluate clinical and instrumental outcomes for hair regrowth.
Main Methods:
- A multicentric, retrospective, case-control study involving 40 patients (20 males, 20 females) with AGA or COVID-19-related HL.
- Patients were divided into two groups: study group (SG) received PEMF + PBST, and control group (CG) received PBST alone.
- Hair regrowth was assessed using photography, global assessment scales, and standardized phototrichograms over 16 weeks.
Main Results:
- The SG demonstrated a statistically significant increase in hair count (HC) of 14 hairs/0.65 cm² compared to baseline.
- The CG showed an HC increase of 11 hairs/0.65 cm².
- The combination of PEMF and PBST resulted in a statistically significant difference (p = 0.0325) in hair regrowth compared to PBST alone.
Conclusions:
- Combined PEMF and PBST is a more effective strategy for improving hair count in patients with hair loss than PBST monotherapy.
- This combination therapy shows potential for standardized and enhanced hair regrowth treatments.
