E C Lazzaro

    Annals of Ophthalmology
    |March 1, 1986

    Summary

Patients with retinal vein occlusion have a 50% chance of also having carotid artery disease. Prompt evaluation for carotid artery disease is recommended for individuals with retinal vein occlusions.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Vascular Neurology

    Background:

    • Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a common cause of vision loss.
    • Carotid artery disease is a significant risk factor for cerebrovascular events.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of concomitant carotid artery disease in patients presenting with retinal vein occlusion.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 12 patients with retinal vein occlusion was retrospectively analyzed.
    • Diagnostic evaluation for carotid artery disease was performed in all patients.

    Main Results:

    • Six out of 12 patients (50%) with retinal vein occlusion were diagnosed with significant carotid artery disease.
    • This indicates a high co-occurrence rate between the two conditions.

    Conclusions:

    • Retinal vein occlusion may serve as a clinical indicator for underlying carotid artery disease.
    • Comprehensive carotid artery evaluation should be considered in the management of patients with retinal vein occlusion.
