Area of Science:

  • Oculoplastic surgery
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Asian blepharoplasty

Background:

  • Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a frequent cosmetic procedure in Asian populations.
  • Complications may arise due to unique anatomical features of Asian eyes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze complications of upper eyelid blepharoplasty in relation to eyelid anatomy.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of modified surgical strategies based on preoperative anatomical classification.

Main Methods:

  • 364 upper eyelid bleoplasties were reviewed for complications (too high/low crease, medial crease issues, bloated crease, asymmetry).
  • Patients were categorized by eyelid type, and modified techniques were applied to 117 subsequent surgeries.
  • Surgeons scored pre- and postoperative results using specific criteria.

Main Results:

  • Postoperative scores significantly improved in the group that received modified surgical strategies (p ≤ 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Preoperative classification of eyelid anatomy is crucial for successful double eyelid surgery.
  • Tailored surgical modifications can effectively minimize common complications associated with upper eyelid blepharoplasty.
