Summary

This study reports the first case of acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) caused by Gemella morbillorum, a rare bacterial infection, in a healthy adolescent. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for recovery and avoiding complications from this unusual thyroiditis.

Background:

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a rare bacterial infection, typically affecting immunocompromised individuals.
Gram-positive aerobic bacteria are the most common cause of AST, with anaerobic infections being exceptionally rare.
Gemella morbillorum, a facultative anaerobic bacterium, is a common upper respiratory tract commensal but has not previously been linked to thyroid infections.
