Incomplete Dominance01:43

Incomplete Dominance

21.5K
Gregor Mendel's work (1822 - 1884) was primarily focused on pea plants. Through his initial experiments, he determined that every gene in a diploid cell has two variants called alleles inherited from each parent. He suggested that amongst these two alleles, one allele is dominant in character and the other recessive. The combination of alleles determines the phenotype of a gene in an organism.

Area of Science:

  • Feline genetics and genomics.
  • Application of DNA variant discovery in domestic cats.

Background:

  • Numerous genetic variants are identified in domestic cats, with many linked to inherited diseases and phenotypic traits.
  • Technological advancements enable large-panel genetic testing at a reduced cost, offering extensive DNA insights.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review available genetic tests for cats.
  • To guide veterinarians in selecting appropriate testing laboratories.
  • To provide advice on genetic testing counseling for cat owners and breeders.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesis of scientific literature on feline DNA variant discovery and implications.
  • Utilization of data from the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Animals (OMIA) database.
  • Inclusion of expert recommendations based on feline genetics experience.

Main Results:

  • Large-panel genetic testing provides numerous DNA results cost-effectively.
  • Commercial genetic testing services vary, and selecting the best laboratory requires careful consideration.
  • Interpretation of genetic data and test results can be complex, potentially leading to misinterpretations.

Conclusions:

  • Genetic testing is essential for feline health monitoring, targeted therapy, and advancing scientific understanding.
  • Veterinary practitioners, especially those with breeder clients, should integrate genetic testing into diagnostic and healthcare plans.
  • Proper interpretation and counseling are vital to avoid misinterpretations and ensure effective breed and population management.
