Background:

Airborne ultrasound phased arrays (AUPAs) enable non-contact tactile sensations and acoustic levitation.
Current calibration methods for AUPAs are manual and lack flexibility, limiting their application.
Precise pose calibration is critical, as small deviations can significantly impact focal pressure.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop a flexible and efficient calibration method for airborne ultrasound phased arrays (AUPAs).
To enable accurate relative pose determination for AUPA units, even in difficult-to-access configurations.

Main Methods:

Utilized augmented reality markers for initial pose estimation of AUPA units.
Employed thermal imaging to map pressure distribution based on estimated poses.
Applied Bayesian optimization to refine pose parameters and minimize focal point error.

Main Results:

Successfully demonstrated an image-processing-based calibration technique for AUPAs.
Achieved efficient and accurate calibration of relative AUPA unit poses.
The method is effective even for AUPA units in challenging-to-measure locations.
