Is There a Need for Functional Radiographs in Diagnosing Lumbar Instability?

Functional radiography (FRF) and extension (FRE) can help diagnose spinal instability, especially in borderline cases. Measuring sagittal translation (ST) on standard radiographs may suffice, but FRF offers clearer translational instability insights.

- Diagnosing instability via ST differences in SP and MRI may be sufficient without additional functional radiographs.
- FRF demonstrated translational instability more clearly than MRI in certain patients.
- FRF can be a valuable tool for diagnosing spinal instability, particularly in ambiguous or borderline cases.
