Financial toxicity (FT) is common in early-phase clinical trial (EPCT) participants. While moderate FT was reported, it did not significantly change during the trial, indicating a need for interventions to improve access to novel therapies.

Background:

  • Financial toxicity (FT) negatively impacts patient quality of life and clinical trial enrollment.
  • Early-phase clinical trials (EPCTs) may exacerbate FT due to increased patient demands.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess baseline FT and its change over 2 months in advanced solid malignancy patients undergoing EPCTs.
  • To identify factors associated with FT in this patient population.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective survey study involving 146 patients in EPCTs.
  • Utilized the Comprehensive Score for Financial Toxicity (COST) instrument at baseline and 2 months.
  • Collected sociodemographic data and cancer-related information.

Main Results:

  • Mean baseline COST score was 22.12, indicating moderate FT.
  • FT was associated with being a primary wage earner and inversely with age.
  • No significant change in FT was observed between baseline and 2-month follow-up (p=0.28).

Conclusions:

  • Moderate FT is prevalent among EPCT participants at baseline and during treatment.
  • Current EPCT participation does not appear to significantly alter the level of FT.
  • Strategies are needed to mitigate FT and enhance access to innovative cancer treatments.
