    Summary

    Gastrin (G) cells were found in the antrum and all three parts of the duodenum in healthy men. Duodenal G cell counts were significantly lower than in the antrum.

    Background:

    • Gastrin (G) cells are crucial for regulating gastric acid secretion.
    • Their presence and distribution in the duodenum are not fully understood.
    • Previous studies have yielded conflicting results regarding duodenal G cell distribution.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and relative abundance of G cells in the human duodenum.
    • To compare G cell distribution in the antrum and different duodenal segments.

    Main Methods:

    • Indirect immunofluorescence technique was employed.
    • Six asymptomatic male subjects with normal gastrointestinal parameters were studied.
    • G cell presence was assessed in gastric fundus, antrum, and three duodenal portions (bulbar, descending, horizontal).

    • G cells were confirmed in the antral mucosa and all three studied duodenal portions.
    • G cell numbers in each duodenal segment were significantly lower than in the antrum (P < 0.0005).

    • The human duodenum harbors G cells, with varying distribution across its segments.
    • The antrum exhibits a higher density of G cells compared to the duodenum.
