    Summary

    Conjunctival biopsies are effective for diagnosing sarcoidosis. Early, random, bilateral biopsies yield high positive rates for granulomatous lesions in suspected sarcoidosis cases.

    Background:

    • Systemic sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that can affect various organs.
    • Ocular manifestations are common in sarcoidosis, but diagnosis can be challenging.
    • Conjunctival biopsy is a potential diagnostic tool for ocular sarcoidosis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic yield of conjunctival biopsies in patients with suspected systemic sarcoidosis.
    • To determine the incidence of positive granulomatous lesions in conjunctival biopsies.
    • To assess the utility of random, bilateral conjunctival biopsies for sarcoidosis diagnosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study design.
    • 28 patients with suspected systemic sarcoidosis underwent 55 conjunctival biopsies.
    • Histopathological examination for granulomatous lesions.

    Main Results:

    • Positive granulomatous lesions were found in 71.4% of proven sarcoidosis cases (10/14 patients).

    • Conjunctival biopsy offers a minimally invasive approach to confirm sarcoidosis.
