Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report on a single-center experience with ballistic talus fractures.
  • To outline epidemiological findings and outcomes of these injuries.

  • Retrospective review of skeletally mature patients with ballistic talus fractures (August 2019 - June 2023).
  • Characterization of fracture morphology, displacement, and talar declination angle (TDA).
  • Documentation of demographic variables and complications.

  • 21 patients with ballistic talus fractures were analyzed.
  • 52% of fractures were displaced, and 81% involved associated ipsilateral foot/ankle fractures.
  • Operative fixation improved TDA; overall complication rate was 29%, including avascular necrosis and non-union.

  • This study presents a unique cohort of gunshot-related talar fractures.
  • Operative intervention may improve TDA, but complications necessitate careful management.
  • Further research with longer follow-up is required to enhance understanding and treatment.
