One week of nighttime voiding diary registration and two days of daytime registration are sufficient for accurately assessing nocturnal urine production and maximum voided volume in children with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis. This approach may improve patient compliance.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Urology
- Clinical Diagnostics
- Urodynamics
Background:
- Voiding diaries are crucial for diagnosing enuresis in children.
- Optimal registration duration for voiding diaries remains undefined.
- Accurate patient characterization is essential for effective enuresis management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess intra-individual variability in voiding diary parameters.
- To determine if one week of data suffices for evaluating nocturnal urine production (NUP) and maximum voided volume (MVV) in children with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE).
Main Methods:
- Analysis of 228 14-day voiding diaries from treatment-naïve children (6-14 years) with MNE.
- Nocturnal urine production (NUP) estimated via diaper weight and first morning void volume.
- Maximum voided volume (MVV) recorded with and without the first morning void.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in NUP and MVV between one and two weeks of registration.
- No significant differences when comparing one week versus 14 days of data.
- Subtype characterization changes occurred in 8-12% of children when reducing registration from two weeks to two days.
Conclusions:
- One week of nighttime and two days of daytime voiding diary registration provide valid NUP and MVV estimates.
- Two days of data may suffice for ICCS subtype characterization, potentially improving compliance.
- Shorter voiding diary registration periods can ensure valid diagnostic parameters.
