Immunofluorescence Microscopy

11.2K
A fluorescence microscope uses fluorescent chromophores called fluorochromes, which can absorb energy from a light source and then emit this energy as visible light. Fluorochromes include naturally fluorescent substances (such as chlorophylls) and fluorescent stains that are added to the specimen to create contrast. Dyes such as Texas red and FITC are examples of fluorochromes. Other examples include the nucleic acid dyes 4’,6’-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), and acridine orange.

Area of Science:

  • Virology
  • Microbiology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Frank Macfarlane Burnet, a notable Australian scientist, pursued medical studies at the University of Melbourne.
  • Burnet conducted early research on bacteriophages in England, earning a PhD.

Observation:

  • Burnet's research focused on bacteriophages and viruses.
  • He worked at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Australia.

Findings:

  • Developed a novel method for cultivating viruses using living chick embryos between 1932-1933.
  • This technique was a significant advancement in virological research.

Implications:

  • The chick embryo cultivation method revolutionized the study of viruses.
  • This innovation paved the way for future developments in vaccine production and virology.
  • Burnet's work laid the foundation for understanding viral propagation.
