Background:

  • Traditional management often involves long-term silicone oil (SO) tamponade, which can lead to complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of short-term postoperative endotamponade using perfluorocarbon liquids (PFCLs) in RRD treatment.
  • To compare outcomes with conventional single-stage pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and SO tamponade.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study comparing two groups: Group 1 (2-stage PPV with short-term PFCL tamponade) and Group 2 (single-stage PPV with long-term SO tamponade).
  • Evaluated 74 eyes (68 patients) with a mean age of 48.19 years; 18.9% had high myopia, 13.5% had prior trauma.

Main Results:

  • Group 1 demonstrated significantly better best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improvement at all postoperative time points (P=.004 to P=.00006).

Conclusions:

  • Short-term PFCL endotamponade offers improved functional outcomes for giant retinal tear-associated RRD.
  • This approach may represent a valuable alternative to long-term SO tamponade, enhancing visual recovery.
