Equilibrium and Balance01:15

Equilibrium and Balance

4.4K
The inner ear assumes dual functionalities of auditory perception and equilibrium maintenance. The vestibule is the organ responsible for balance. This organ contains mechanoreceptors, specifically hair cells, endowed with stereocilia, which aid in deciphering information regarding the position and motion of our heads. Two intrinsic components, the utricle and saccule, help perceive head position, while the semicircular canals track head movement. Neurological messages initiated in the...

The Vestibular System01:29

The Vestibular System

39.3K
The vestibular system is a set of inner ear structures that provide a sense of balance and spatial orientation. This system is comprised of structures within the labyrinth of the inner ear, including the cochlea and two otolith organs—the utricle and saccule. The labyrinth also contains three semicircular canals—superior, posterior, and horizontal—that are oriented on different planes.

Summary

Acute vestibular loss temporarily biases numerical processing, shifting the mental number line left or right. This effect, observed in patients with vestibular neuritis (VN), is more pronounced without visual cues and resolves over time.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Spatial Cognition

Background:

  • The mental number line spatially represents numerical magnitude, with smaller numbers on the left and larger numbers on the right.
  • Vestibular dysfunction impacts spatial cognition, raising questions about its effect on numerical representation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether acute vestibular loss in patients with vestibular neuritis (VN) induces a directional bias in mental number line representation.
  • To determine if this bias correlates with the side of vestibular lesion (left vs. right VN).

Main Methods:

  • A mental number bisection task was administered to 18 patients with acute vestibular neuritis (VN) and 15 healthy controls.
  • Participants estimated the midpoint between two numbers, with performance analyzed based on the side of VN and visual fixation conditions.

Main Results:

  • Patients with left VN showed a leftward bias (underestimation), while right VN patients exhibited a rightward bias (overestimation).
  • The magnitude and direction of the bias correlated with the slow-phase velocity of vestibular nystagmus.
  • The bias was more significant in the acute stage and without visual fixation, diminishing within 1-2 weeks.

Conclusions:

  • Acute vestibular loss induces a transient, directional bias in numerical processing, dependent on visual input.
  • This finding suggests a link between vestibular function, spatial cognition, and the mental number line, similar to visuospatial neglect patterns.
