  • Collected speech samples from 538 typically developing children (ages 2;6–9;11).
  • Measured intelligibility via listener transcription of words.
  • Calculated speaking rate in syllables per second.
  • Used regression models to analyze effects of age, utterance length, and speaking rate on intelligibility.

Main Results:

  • Overall positive correlation between intelligibility and speaking rate, weakening with age adjustment.
  • Intelligibility increased with age and decreased with utterance length.
  • Trend for decreased intelligibility with increased speaking rate, particularly in longer utterances.
  • Most children exhibited a negative effect of speaking rate on intelligibility at the individual level.

Conclusions:

  • Findings support the hypothesis of a speed-accuracy trade-off in children's speech production.
  • Increased speaking rate is associated with reduced articulatory accuracy and intelligibility.
  • Further research is needed to apply these findings in clinical settings.
