Investigating immune activity in sensorineural deafness revealed elevated circulating immune complexes in most patients. This finding suggests immune complexes may be a common pathway in various cochleovestibular disorders.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Otolaryngology
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Investigated patients with progressive bilateral or sudden sensorineural deafness of unknown cause for abnormal immune activity.
    • Studied 26 cases with significantly raised circulating immune complexes and 2 cases of clinical autoimmune deafness with normal complexes.
    • Included 36 control subjects for comparison.

    Observation:

    • Patients with sensorineural deafness of unknown etiology were assessed for immune system involvement.
    • Circulating immune complexes were significantly elevated in a majority of investigated cases.
    • Immune complexes were normal in cases of clinical autoimmune deafness.

    Findings:

    • Twenty-six patients with sensorineural deafness exhibited significantly raised circulating immune complexes.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Two patients with clinical autoimmune deafness had normal circulating immune complexes.
  • The study explored the pathogenesis linking immune complexes to sensorineural deafness.
  • Implications:

    • Suggests a potential autoimmune or infection-related etiology for some sensorineural deafness cases.
    • Partial reversal of deafness observed with systemic steroids or plasma exchange treatment.
    • Hypothesizes circulating immune complexes as a common pathophysiological pathway in cochleovestibular disorders.
