Routine blood tests can help track Multiple Sclerosis (MS) progression. Elevated Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) may indicate a higher risk of transitioning from Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS) to Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS).

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess routine blood count parameters as diagnostic and prognostic markers for MS progression.
  • To investigate the relationship between blood parameters and disability in different MS subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of blood parameters in 182 patients with Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS) and 60 with Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS).
  • Correlation of blood parameters with the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores.

Main Results:

  • In RRMS, Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW) correlated positively with EDSS.
  • In SPMS, White Blood Cell count (WBC) and Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) correlated positively with EDSS.

  • Elevated MPV levels indicated an increased risk of transitioning from RRMS to SPMS.

  • MPV holds potential clinical relevance for monitoring MS progression and patient risk stratification.
