This study presents an open-source, modular cold and hot press for creating polymer and composite material testing samples. The versatile design can be integrated with existing hydraulic presses or used independently for various material characterization needs.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Mechanical Engineering
- Polymer Science
Background:
- Material characterization requires standardized sample preparation.
- Existing hot presses can be expensive and specialized.
- Need for accessible, customizable sample production equipment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To design and detail an open-source, modular cold and hot press.
- To enable researchers to produce standardized material testing samples.
- To facilitate the creation of polymer and composite samples for property determination.
Main Methods:
- Developed a modular press with independent upper/lower plate assemblies (929 cm²).
- Integrated four 125 W insulated steel strip heaters per plate for controlled heating.
- Designed modular steel housing for ease of manufacture, assembly, and customization.
- Incorporated options for integration with hydraulic presses or standalone operation using a support frame and bottle jack.
- Utilized modular molds for producing flat sheet stock and solid test samples (ASTM D695, ASTM D638).
Main Results:
- Successfully designed a versatile hot and cold press system.
- Demonstrated the capability to produce samples for material property testing (compression and tension).
- Enabled the creation of stock sheets for 2.5-D applications.
- Modular design allows for customization and ease of assembly.
Conclusions:
- The open-source press design provides an accessible solution for material sample preparation.
- Researchers can produce critical polymer and composite material properties samples.
- The system supports both integrated and standalone operation for flexibility.
