A social support system is a structured network of personal relationships that provides assistance to individuals facing various challenges, offering a buffer against psychological and physical stressors. This network may consist of family members, friends, neighbors, colleagues, or other community members who provide resources and companionship. Social support can take many forms, including advice, emotional comfort, practical help, and companionship. Research indicates that these networks can...

Cognitive Development During Adulthood

50
Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...

Electroconvulsive Therapy01:30

Electroconvulsive Therapy

25
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or shock therapy, remains a critical biomedical intervention for severe, treatment-resistant depression. While its origins can be traced back to Hippocrates' observations that malaria-induced convulsions alleviated mental illness, modern ECT has evolved significantly from its earlier, more primitive applications. First introduced in 1938 by Ugo Cerletti and his colleagues, ECT involves inducing controlled seizures using electrical currents. In its early...

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Antidepressant Drugs: MAOIs and Other Agents

194
Atypical antidepressants, including bupropion (Wellbutrin), mirtazapine (Remeron), nefazodone (Serzone), trazodone (Desyrel), and vilazodone (Viibryd), offer unique mechanisms of action. Bupropion weakly inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake, aiding depression treatment and smoking cessation, with a low risk of sexual dysfunction. Mirtazapine enhances serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmission, leading to sedation, increased appetite, and weight gain. As a result, it helps treat...

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Elder abuse (EA) is a significant public health issue with severe consequences, including high mortality and depression.
  • Approximately one-third of elder abuse victims experience depression, highlighting a critical need for effective interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between suicidal ideation (SI) and victim characteristics in elder abuse.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of PROTECT psychotherapy in reducing depression among elder abuse victims, irrespective of suicidal ideation.
  • To determine if PROTECT psychotherapy can decrease suicidal ideation in elder abuse victims.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 158 depressed elder abuse victims (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) without cognitive impairment participated.
  • PROTECT psychotherapy, a 10-week behavioral intervention, was delivered in 45-minute sessions (in-person or remote).
  • Depression severity and suicidal ideation were assessed weekly using the PHQ-9, with data analyzed via mixed-effects models.

Main Results:

  • No significant association was found between demographic or elder abuse characteristics and suicidal ideation.
  • PROTECT psychotherapy demonstrated significant reductions in depression severity for both SI and non-SI groups.
  • Suicidal ideation decreased throughout the treatment, with prevalence dropping from 19% at baseline to 5.7% at study completion.

Conclusions:

  • Suicidal ideation is uniformly distributed across elder abuse victims, regardless of their background.
  • The PROTECT psychotherapy is a viable and effective treatment for reducing both depression and suicidal ideation in elder abuse survivors.
