This study reports two cases of asymptomatic inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms discovered during aortic surgery. Operative intervention is recommended for mycotic lesions and other aneurysms in patients undergoing aortic repair.

    Area of Science:

    • Vascular Surgery
    • Interventional Radiology

    Background:

    • Inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms are rare vascular lesions.
    • Diagnosis often occurs incidentally during imaging or surgery for other conditions.

    Observation:

    • Two patients with asymptomatic inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms were identified during reconstructive surgery for infrarenal aortic disease.
    • One aneurysm was found via arteriography, the other during operation.
    • This brings the total reported cases to 13.

    Findings:

    • A comparison was made between these two cases and eight previously reported cases.
    • Etiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment strategies were analyzed.
    • The natural history of these aneurysms is not well-defined.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • Surgical intervention is considered appropriate for mycotic inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms.
    • Aneurysms in patients undergoing aortic operations may also warrant intervention.
    • Further research is needed to define the natural history and optimal management of these rare aneurysms.
