The somatosensory system relays sensory information from the skin, mucous membranes, limbs, and joints. Somatosensation is more familiarly known as the sense of touch. A typical somatosensory pathway includes three types of long neurons: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Background:

  • Sensory processing sensitivity is a trait characterized by deeper cognitive processing of physical and social stimuli.
  • Sensation seeking involves the pursuit of varied, novel, complex, and intense sensations and experiences.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between sensory processing sensitivity and sensation seeking.
  • To examine gender differences in these traits.

Main Methods:

  • 625 subjects (225 women, 400 men) completed the Highly Sensitive Person Scale (HSPS) and the Arnett Inventory of Sensation Seeking (AISS).
  • Regression analyses were used to determine the association between HSPS and AISS scores.

Main Results:

  • Sensation seeking (AISS) accounted for 11.1% of the variance in sensory processing sensitivity (HSPS).
  • A negative association was found between the Intensity dimension of AISS and HSPS.
  • Men scored lower on HSPS but higher on AISS Novelty and Intensity compared to women.

Conclusions:

  • Gender differences exist in sensory processing sensitivity and sensation seeking.
  • A negative correlation between sensory processing sensitivity and the intensity of sensation seeking suggests these traits may be inversely related.
  • The findings support the theoretical connection and overlap between sensory processing sensitivity and sensation seeking.
