Oral Cavity

425
The oral cavity, or the mouth, is a complex structure in humans that plays a vital role in our day-to-day lives. Its role is not only in chewing and swallowing food; it also plays a role in speech and facial expressions.
Teeth: The teeth are the hardest structures in our bodies. Humans have two sets of teeth throughout their lifetime: deciduous (baby) teeth and permanent teeth. Each tooth consists of several parts: the crown (visible part), the root (embedded in the jaw), enamel (hard outer...

Summary

This case report details a rare cavernous hemangioma in the retromaxillary masticatory space. Surgical excision was successful, confirming a benign vascular malformation without malignancy.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Head and Neck Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Hemangiomas are common benign congenital vascular tumors in the head and neck.
  • Cavernous hemangiomas typically occur on the nasal lateral wall or inferior turbinate.
  • These lesions can lead to facial deformities despite indolent growth.

Observation:

  • A 67-year-old woman presented with a cavernous hemangioma in an unusual location: the left retromaxillary masticatory space.
  • The lesion was surgically excised using the Caldwell-Luc approach.
  • Post-operative examination confirmed the diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Anatomopathological and immunohistochemical analyses revealed a malformative vascular lesion.
  • The findings were consistent with a cavernous hemangioma.
  • No signs of malignancy were detected.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare locations for cavernous hemangiomas.
  • Successful surgical management via Caldwell-Luc access is demonstrated.
  • Accurate diagnosis prevents unnecessary aggressive treatment for benign conditions.
