  • To examine how varying levels of virtual partner adaptivity affect interpersonal synchrony and the interaction experience in relation to BPD traits.

  • Interpersonal synchrony was measured using a finger-tapping task with a virtual partner (VP) exhibiting adaptive or nonadaptive behavior.

  • Increased VP adaptivity led to decreased asynchrony and perceived synchrony.
  • High BPD traits correlated with greater asynchrony and variability, contingent on VP adaptivity.

  • High BPD traits are associated with diminished interpersonal synchrony during interactive tasks.
  • Findings highlight the potential role of interpersonal synchrony in therapeutic alliance building for individuals with BPD traits.
