Preventive Healthcare Services

963
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-V: Management

2.5K
Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) involves a multifaceted approach to reduce symptoms, prevent exacerbations, improve overall health status, and slow disease progression. Key strategies include lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, supportive therapies, and, in some cases, surgery. Here is an overview of the primary COPD management strategies:

Nursing management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is crucial for providing thorough care and support to patients. Nurses play an integral role in this process through detailed assessment, careful planning, targeted interventions, and ongoing evaluation. Here's an overview of the critical steps in nursing management for COPD.

Genome-wide Association Studies-GWAS

12.4K
Genome-wide association studies or GWAS are used to identify whether common SNPs are associated with certain diseases. Suppose specific SNPs are more frequently observed in individuals with a particular disease than those without the disease. In that case, those SNPs are said to be associated with the disease. Chi-square analysis is performed to check the probability of the allele likely to be associated with the disease.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Rheumatology
  • Exercise Science

Background:

  • Physical activity (PA) is vital for managing arthritis symptoms.
  • Limited understanding exists regarding health care provider (HCP) counseling on PA for adults with arthritis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the recency, correlates, and content of HCP counseling about PA among US adults with arthritis.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from the Porter Novelli FallStyles cross-sectional survey.
  • Assessment of PA counseling frequency, content (assessment, advice), and recommendations among adults with arthritis (n=1,113).
  • Weighted analysis considering demographics and health status (obesity, chronic pain).

Main Results:

  • Only 16.8% received PA counseling from HCPs within the past 6 months; 30.4% never received it.
  • PA counseling was more prevalent in adults with obesity (PR=1.3) and chronic pain (PR=1.2).
  • Most common counseling involved PA assessment (74.7%), while specific PA prescriptions were rare (6.1%). Recommendations included flexibility (40.1%), aerobic (39.8%), and muscle-strengthening exercises (36.6%), with only 4.4% recommended arthritis-appropriate PA programs.

Conclusions:

  • HCP counseling on PA for arthritis symptom management is insufficient in frequency and actionable content.
  • There's a critical need for policies and programs to enhance high-quality HCP counseling and referrals to evidence-based PA programs for arthritis.
