Background:

Medical boards mandate quality improvement (QI) projects for Maintenance of Certification Part IV (MOC4) credits.
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Portfolio Program enables organizations to sponsor internal QI project review and credit physicians.
The M Health Fairview MOC4 Review Board (MMRB) was established as an ABMS Portfolio Sponsor in 2016.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the impact of the ABMS Portfolio Sponsor program on the scholarship, sustainability, and spread of QI projects.
To assess the effectiveness of the MMRB in facilitating physician engagement with QI initiatives.

Main Methods:

A survey was developed and administered to principal investigators (PIs) of QI projects approved by the MMRB from 2016 to 2022.
The survey assessed the number of peer-reviewed publications or presentations and perceived preparedness for scholarship.
Participants also reported on the sustainment and spread of their QI projects post-approval.

Main Results:

Of 50 reviewed projects, 44 met ABMS QI standards. Of 41 PIs surveyed, 27 responded.
65.9% of respondents felt the MMRB process enhanced their scholarly dissemination preparedness.
70.4% presented their work, and 37.0% submitted manuscripts (10 accepted); 85.2% of projects were sustained, and 37.0% spread.

Conclusions:

The MMRB process effectively generates MOC4 credits for physicians.
The program enhances PIs' preparedness for scholarly activities, including publication and presentation.
The MMRB facilitates the sustainment and spread of quality improvement projects within the healthcare organization.
