Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

307
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

12.7K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.3K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Introduction to Test of Independence01:21

Introduction to Test of Independence

2.2K
In statistics, the term independence means that one can directly obtain the probability of any event involving both variables by multiplying their individual probabilities. Tests of independence are chi-square tests involving the use of a contingency table of observed (data) values.
The test statistic for a test of independence is similar to that of a goodness-of-fit test:

Measures of Intelligence01:29

Measures of Intelligence

6.3K
Psychologists measure intelligence by using standardized tests that produce a score known as the intelligence quotient or IQ. To understand IQ tests, it's important to recognize the key principles behind their construction: validity, reliability, and standardization.
Validity refers to how well a test measures what it claims to measure. An intelligence test should accurately assess intelligence rather than another characteristic, like anxiety. Criterion validity is one way to evaluate this;...

Borderline Personality Disorder01:25

Borderline Personality Disorder

36
Borderline Personality Disorder is a complex and multifaceted mental health condition characterized by pervasive instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, and impulse control. This instability manifests in extreme emotional reactions, fear of abandonment, and self-destructive behaviors. The disorder significantly impacts daily functioning, often leading to distress in both personal and professional domains.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Researchers developed the Sexual Boredom Inventory (SBI) to measure temporary sexual boredom. This new tool shows sexual boredom is linked to lower sexual pleasure and attention difficulties.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sexuality Studies
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Sexual boredom is a common experience, yet its measurement and implications remain underexplored.
  • Understanding transient states of sexual boredom is crucial for addressing sexual dissatisfaction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Sexual Boredom Inventory (SBI), a brief measure for assessing sexual boredom.
  • To examine the psychometric properties of the SBI and its relationship with other psychological constructs.

Main Methods:

  • Item generation through qualitative analysis.
  • Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (EFA/CFA) on adult sexual experience data.
  • Assessment of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) and discriminant validity.

Main Results:

  • A robust 6-item Sexual Boredom Inventory (SBI) was developed, fitting a single-factor model.
  • The SBI demonstrated good internal consistency (α = .88) and discriminant validity.
  • Sexual boredom correlated negatively with sexual pleasure and well-being, and positively with attention difficulties and impulsivity, suggesting a link with ADHD.

Conclusions:

  • Sexual boredom, as a transient state, is associated with negative sexual outcomes.
  • The SBI is a reliable and valid tool for assessing recent sexual boredom.
  • Findings suggest potential links between sexual boredom, attention deficits, and impulsivity, warranting further investigation and intervention development.
